Celtic avoided an embarrassing defeat at Victoria Park on Saturday as Kris Commons produced a late goal to help the reigning Scottish Premier League champions salvage a point in a 1-1 draw with Ross County.

The home side took the lead four minutes after halftime when Richard Brittain curled a brilliant free kick into the back of the net.

Celtic began to play with more urgency and had a penalty shout shortly after the opener when Georgios Samaras was tripped up in the box, but referee Craig Thompson allowed play to continue.

With time winding down, the Hoops pumped more players into the box, desperately seeking an equalizer that eventually came in stoppage time.

Commons provided the telling goal with virtually the last kick of the ball, slotting home from close range after Tony Watts' shot had been blocked.

Celtic has claimed four points from its two matches this term while Ross County has drawn all three of its contests.

Commons' strike wasn't the only late goal in Scotland's top flight on Saturday as Conor Pepper produced a stoppage-time equalizer to help Inverness earn a point in a 2-2 draw with Hearts.

Elsewhere in Saturday's Scottish Premier League action, Jamie Murphy bagged a brace to help Motherwell take a 2-1 win at Kilmarnock, Hibernian's Leigh Griffiths scored twice in a 2-1 win at St. Mirren and Aberdeen claimed its first win of the season with a 2-1 defeat of St. Johnstone.
