La Romana, Dominican Republic (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Buttacavoli parred the third playoff hole on Sunday to defeat Rich Cochran III and win the Dominican Republic Open.

Buttacavoli closed with a 5-under 67 at the Teeth of the Dog course at Casa de Campo. Cochran shot 4-under 68 as the pair finished at 12-under-par 276.

Buttacavoli was even-par through 10 holes with three birdies and three bogeys. He vaulted to 11-under with four straight birdies from the 11th. Buttacavoli, who was in the penultimate group with Cochran, birdied the 18th to get in at minus-12.

Cochran, who shared the third-round lead with Danny Balin and Chris Gilman, had four birdies and an eagle through 11 holes to soar into the lead at 14- under. He traded a bogey for a birdie from the 13th, then faltered to bogeys at 17 and 18 to drop into the playoff. Despite the loss, he posted his fourth runner-up finish of the season.

Julian Etulain shot 67 to grab third at minus-11, while Vaita Guillaume also closed with a 67 to end alone in fourth at 10-under 278.

Balin tripped to a 1-over 73 to fall into a tie for eighth at minus-7, while Gilman struggled to a 2-over 74, which left him in a share of 12th at 6-under- par 282.
