Borussia Moenchengladbach signs US midfielder Fabian Johnson from Hoffenheim

Germany's Borussia Moenchengladbach has signed U. S. midfielder Fabian Johnson from Bundesliga rival Hoffenheim as of next season.

Moenchengladbach says Johnson has received a four-year contract that becomes valid in the new season. Johnson comes as a free agent.

Moenchengladbach's sports director Max Eberl says Johnson is a "very interesting player ... who can play on both flanks as a defender or attacker."

Although he won the European title with Germany's Under-21 team in 2009, Johnson later decided to play for the United States. He has 91 Bundesliga games for Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim.
