The Bengals apparently saw enough of AJ McCarron in Monday night's preseason loss to Tampa Bay to believe they only need two quarterbacks on the depth chart.

The team announced the release of backup Josh Johnson on Tuesday, one day after McCarron completed 11-of-15 passes for 97 yards in his preseason debut. Johnson did not play Monday night, but was 11 for 21 for 175 yards in the preseason opener against the Giants while also adding 37 yards on the ground.

Johnson, who backed up Andy Dalton in 2013, was re-signed by Cincinnati earlier this offseason after spending last year with the San Francisco 49ers. His release leaves Keith Wenning as the third quarterback on the roster, but he'll most likely end up on the practice squad if he stays in Cincinnati.

The Bengals also waived a pair of undrafted rookies in safety Erick Dargan and defensive tackle Kalafitoni Pole on Tuesday.
