FBC--PENN STATE-ABUSE

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Many in this leafy, vibrant college town nicknamed "Happy Valley" worry the temporary evisceration of Penn State's football program might inflict similar damage on a community that, for years, thrived as fans flocked to home games at the massive football stadium and a far-flung alumni base stayed connected by loyalty — and by checkbook. "Football is absolutely intertwined with the university, therefore the town," one student says. "Such hard hits really will hit the town economically, as well as a community." By Marc Levy, Mark Scolforo and Kevin Begos.

FBC--PENN STATE-NCAA

INDIANAPOLIS — Slow. Toothless. Tone deaf to the real problems in college sports. The NCAA has heard such criticisms for years. In punishing the Penn State football program with an unprecedented series of sanctions, President Mark Emmert said he hopes the NCAA has served notice that a win-at-all-costs mentality in major college football won't be tolerated. FBC--PENN STATE-ABUSE-FINANCES

NEW YORK — The $60 million fine levied on Penn State by the NCAA doesn't look so big next to the scale of the athletic department's finances. Penn State plans to pay the fine, part of sanctions announced Monday over the child sexual abuse scandal, in five annual installments of $12 million. By Rachel Cohen. Sent previously.

COMMENTARY:

FBC--TIM DAHLBERG-072312

Banning Penn State from bowl games for four years won't bring back the innocence Jerry Sandusky took from who knows how many young boys. Taking football scholarships away and vacating wins over the past 14 years will do nothing to help them heal. And the $60 million fine handed down Monday by the NCAA won't be nearly enough to buy back Penn State's self-respect. By Sports Columnist Tim Dahlberg. Sent previously.

BBA--YANKEES-MARINERS TRADE

SEATTLE — Ichiro Suzuki is headed to a new team and, after all these years, maybe a shot at playing in the World Series. The New York Yankees acquired the star outfielder from the Seattle Mariners in a trade Monday for two young pitchers. "I am going from a team with the most losses to a team with the most wins," he said. "It's hard to contain my excitement for that reason."

BBA--TORRID TIGERS

DETROIT — Justin Verlander performed like an ace is supposed to and the rest of the Detroit Tigers followed suit. With a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox, Detroit took over the lead in the AL Central and gave its excited fans reason to believe the Tigers' first-half funk may be well behind them. BBA--ATHLETICS-MONEYBALL AGAIN?

OAKLAND, Calif. — Moneyball, take two? Exactly a decade after the Oakland Athletics inspired the book that became a major motion picture starring Brad Pitt last summer, baseball's most frugal franchise is becoming a must-see attraction again. The A's are a majors-best 14-2 in July and coming off a stunning four-game sweep of the high-priced New York Yankees to move into a tie for the final American League wild card spot. BKC--OKLAHOMA ST-WILLIAMS CHARGED

STILLWATER, Okla. — A suspended Oklahoma State basketball player broke down in tears as he was convicted on charges that accused him of sexually assaulting two women, then turned to jurors and yelled "I didn't do it." Darrell Williams was convicted Monday night of two counts of rape by instrumentation and one count of sexual battery. Jurors acquitted him on two other counts of rape by instrumentation. OLY--BKO-US-SPAIN AGAIN

BARCELONA, Spain — Maybe Spain can convince its home fans that the game doesn't matter. No way Kobe Bryant is buying it. A game against the U.S. — the team that beat them for the Olympic basketball gold medal four years earlier — this time in front of their own crowd? The Spanish players are supposed to be OK with losing, because it's only an exhibition? By Basketball Writer Brian Mahoney. Sent previously.

OLY--LONDON 2012-OPENING CEREMONY

LONDON — The London Olympics opening ceremony will be a grand spectacle — but will it be a surprise? In a word, no. Director Danny Boyle wants the details to stay secret and games chief Sebastian Coe has pleaded for insiders to stop leaking details of the extravaganza. But in the age of camera phones and social media, with 10,000 performers in the ceremony, thousands of Olympic security and staff and more than 10,000 journalists already at the Olympic Park, not much can be kept out of the public domain. FBN--BACK TO FOOTBALL

Peyton Manning has changed his ride, from a Colt to a Bronco. Tebowmania has moved from the Rocky Mountains to the Meadowlands. Randy Moss is back. So is Jeff Fisher. Al Davis is gone. As NFL training camps open from Mankato to Metairie, from Flagstaff to Flowery Branch, the spotlight will shine most brightly on Denver, and a certain No. 18 at quarterback.
