Stanford junior Mallory Burdette, playing in her first career singles main draw event, was on her way to a shocking upset Thursday against the 10th-ranked player in the world. Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli kicked her game into high gear, though, and won the final 11 games of their second-round match at the $740,000 Bank of the West Classic.
Burdette, who was the runner-up in NCAA singles and champion in doubles, was ahead 5-2 and carried a couple of set points against the second-seeded Bartoli, but the momentum came to a crashing halt in a 7-5, 6-0 loss on the hardcourts at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Bartoli was last year's Stanford runner-up to Serena Williams, titled here in 2009, and was also a Bank of the West runner-up in 2008. She's appeared in three of the last four finals here.
