Avs give Downie 2-year deal

The Colorado Avalanche signed forward Steve Downie to a two-year contract on Friday.
The 25-year-old Downie contributed two goals, 11 assists and recorded a plus- nine rating in 20 games after joining the Avalanche in a February 21 trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Overall last season, he finished with 14 goals and 41 points.
A 2005 first-round pick of Philadelphia, the rugged Downie has registered 55 goals, 82 assists and 654 penalty minutes in 272 career games with the Flyers, Lightning and Avalanche.

Downie would have become a restricted free agent on Sunday.
