Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics have designated pitcher Chad Smith for assignment and selected the contract of pitcher Fernando Rodriguez from their Triple-A affiliate in Nashville.
Smith made two appearances for the Athletics after being recalled on May 3 and allowed five runs in just 1 1/3 innings. On Wednesday against the Twins, the right-hander was charged with four runs in just one-third of an inning in a 13-0 Oakland loss.
Rodriguez had no record with a 2.81 ERA in 10 games, including one start, with Nashville this season. The right-hander was 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA in seven relief outings with the Athletics last year.
