A's call up Barry Zito from minors

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) The Oakland Athletics are bringing up former Cy Young Award winner Barry Zito.
The A's announced Wednesday that they will purchase Zito's contract from Triple-A Nashville. They cleared a roster spot by placing right-hander Jesse Chavez on the 60-day disabled list with a broken rib.
Zito returned to the A's with a minor league contract this season and spent the entire year in Nashville, where . he went 8-7 with a 3.46 ERA in 24 games. He last pitched for the A's in Game 1 of the 2006 AL championsjip series against Detroit and has not pitched in the majors since 2013 with San Francisco.

Zito won the 2002 AL Cy Young with Oakland and went 102-63 with a 3.53 ERA over seven seasons with the A's before leaving as a free agent to sign with the Giants in December 2006.
Oakland also recalled righty Cody Martin from Nashville.
