Shoppers in Alaska were treated to a rare sight Tuesday when a moose gave birth outside a Lowe’s hardware store.

Anchorage police contacted the Alaska Department of Fish and Game about the moose and its baby, Ken Marsh, a wildlife official, told KTVA-TV. Marsh said the staff was ready to assist security if needed.

Katherine Warren, one shopper, alerted security at the Tikahtnu Commons when she spotted the pair while shopping with her family. Security created a barrier around the moose and blocked a section of the store-front driving area.

“Seeing the way she’s been acting — not so much angry, but you can tell she’s just kind of like a little scared and timid and doesn’t know what to think of everything, because everybody has been showing up around the area,” Warren said. “It is exciting, it’s a new life, you know, so it’s very exciting, but at the other end, she needs her privacy.”

Bystanders stood for hours to watch the pair. Some were excited to have the chance to see a moose give birth.

After the birth, the mother and her newborn wandered off through the parking lot.
