Beating drums latter-day druids and revelers flocked to Stonehenge through heavy rain to talk, dance and meditate as they waited for sunrise, which starts the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. Stonehenge, on the Salisbury Plain about 90 miles southwest of London, was built over three phases between 3,000 B.C. and 1,600 B.C. It is one of Britain's most popular tourist attractions; more than 750,000 people visit every year. (AP Photo/Lefteris Pitarakis)

Rain-sodden crowds welcomed a spectacularly rainy summer solstice at Stonehenge in true British fashion Thursday: With stoicism and wit. But through the wind and rain, drummers inside the ancient stone circle kept up their thumping rhythm, new age pagans kept up their chaotic dance, and visitors kept up their sense of humor.
