The United States could be unwittingly violating international sanctions by aiding Iran with fuel money originally sent to Afghanistan, a top U.S. watchdog testified Wednesday.
The Washington Guardian reports that Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction John Sopko stunned lawmakers when he revealed problems with a program that gives aid to the Afghan government to purchase fuel for its military. His office found Pentagon officials are missing records on some of the more than $1 billion sent to the Afghan army.
Sopko noted that Iran supplies a lot of Afghanistan's oil, and speculated that U.S. dollars could be helping Kabul purchase it.

"The United States could be the biggest violator of the oil embargo," he testified.
