Shakira Speaks Out

Shakira, who is of Colombian descent, speaks to members of the press to voice her opposition to the new immigration reform bill passed into law in Arizona (AP).

Shakira said, "I came here to lend my voice and offer my support to the Latino community and to express my public opposition on this law. In my opinion it dulls human and civil rights of citizens and non-citizens." (Reuters).

Shakira has lent her voice to the widespread opposition of the new law.  Over the past week there have been protests and demonstrations by those who are against the new immigration law. (Reuters).

Shakira addressed the crowd and voiced her opinion, saying that she believed the law went against American ideals (Reuters).

Shakira said she wanted to learn more about how the law will be implemented if it goes into effect this summer and to meet with Phoenix's Latino community (Reuters).

The pop star was greeted by legions of fans and people who were against the immigration bill as she made her way to the Carl Hayden Youth Center in Phoenix (Reuters).
