Former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez talks to Fox News Latino at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, FL.
Tampa, Fla. – Former U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, who served under President George W. Bush, speaks to Fox News Latino reporter Bryan Llenas at the Republican National Convention about issues ranging from the economy to the Romney family’s affinity for Latinos.
Gutierrez, now an adviser to GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, said that the economy is in crisis, and cited “low growth and high unemployment” and nothing on the horizon to fix it.
“We have the sixth largest deficit in the world, that is a big issue. Our debt just surpassed the size of our economy.”
He said the Obama administration’s focus on “legalizing the undocumented” is not true immigration reform. Gutierrez also characterized the criticism by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a Democrat who characterized the RNC Hispanic speaker line-up as window-dressing, as insulting.
“Hispanics aren’t here like circus entertainment,” he told Fox News Latino. “They’re real politicians who have made it to a pretty high level – the governor of Puerto Rico, a senator from Florida, Ted Cruz, he’s 42 years old. This is the future. I don’t see the same thing in the Democratic Party, that kind of momentum.”
