Keiko Fujimori Hires Giuliani as Advisor on Citizen Security in Peru

Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has been hired by Peru's presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori to develop public safety programs.

Fujimori, daughter of jailed former President Alberto Fujimori, told reporters in the northern city of Trujillo that she invited Giuliani to advise her on citizen security.

Fujimori faces a June 5th run-off for the presidency of Peru with leftist candidate Ollanta Humala.

The announcement of hiring "America's Mayor" comes a month after Fujimori apologized for the first time for what she calls the excesses of her father's authoritarian rule during the 90's, according to a Reuters report.  Giuliani is said to mainly help with programs combating urban crime.

Giuliani gained a reputation as a crime fighter as a U.S. prosecutor in the 1980s, as well as, world-wide recognition for his response during and after the attacks of 9/11.

Fujimori's father, ex-Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, is serving a 25-year sentence for corruption and for authorizing death squad killings in Peru's struggle against the Pol Potist guerilla movement Shining Path.
