WASHINGTON (AP) – A senior White House official says House Speaker John Boehner has told President Barack Obama the House of Representatives won't vote on an immigration overhaul this year. The official says Obama will take steps on his own to change immigration policies through executive actions, without congressional approval.
Obama is expected to address the immigration issue in remarks later Monday.
The official said Obama will confront a rising influx of children across the border by refocusing immigration enforcement. The move will effectively reduce the number of deportations in the country's interior by stressing enforcement action on individuals who are either recent unlawful border crossers or who present a national security, public safety, or border security threat.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because this person was not authorized to discuss the issue by name ahead of Obama's remarks.
