Homan says cartels celebrating end of Trump policies: 'Biden effect' already happening at border

Biden's promise to reverse key immigration policies raises fears of a surge at the southern border

There will be more issues at the southern border under President-elect Joe Biden's leadership after he vowed to undo President Trump's immigration policies, former acting ICE director Tom Homan said on Wednesday.

“President Trump, whether you like him or love him, he has been more successful on this border than any president I worked for, starting with Ronald Reagan,” Homan told "Fox & Friends."

Homan said illegal immigration “decreased for almost 80%” and added that “less illegal immigration” is correlated with “less death, sexual assault and illegal drug flow,” which are crimes he attributes to “cartels.”

“No help from Congress, no help from the courts, a matter of fact, they fought them every step of the way. Why would you undo such success?”

TRUMP OFFICIALS WARN OF NEW BORDER SURGE IF BIDEN REVERSES IMMIGRATION POLICIES

Biden promised to reverse a number of key immigration policies enacted under President Trump, including many the administration said were key to ending “catch-and-release," a policy in which migrants are released into the U.S. while awaiting immigration hearings. The changes raise fears of a surge at the southern border, which administration officials believe they already are seeing.

Acting Customs and Border Commissioner Mark Morgan, in a conference call with reporters on Thursday, said in response to a Fox News question that it would be a disaster if protection protocols ended. Morgan was appointed by President Trump, but he also served as head of U.S. Border Patrol under President Obama.

Homan said the cartels are “celebrating” a Biden presidency.

“The cartels are celebrating what is happening in this country right now because they are back in business. The border numbers are already going up because they think Joe Biden is going to be the president and they are open for business and the flow has already started.”

Homan concluded: “It’s a Biden effect. It’s already happening.”
