Google Releases List of Most-Viewed Political Videos on YouTube

A 19-year-old college student's impassioned speech before the Iowa House of Representatives in support of gay marriage was YouTube's most-viewed political video of 2011, according to Google.

The three-minute speech by Zach Wahls, a University of Iowa student raised by two women, has been viewed more than 18 million times on the video-sharing website.

Wahls' address to lawmakers last February as they prepared to vote on a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage topped Google's list of the most-viewed political videos of the year, which included President Obama's speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner as well as Texas Gov. Rick Perry's presidential campaign ad titled, "Strong."

The television ad, which was released this month and which calls for an end to "Obama's war on religion," has already been more than 7 million times.

In total, the top 10 most-viewed political videos account for over 50 million views, Google said.

"I'm not really so different from any of your children. My family really isn't so different from yours," Wahls said in the video that quickly went viral, being passed around Facebook and other web sites. "The sexual orientation of my parents has had zero effect on the content of my character."
