The (current) world of youth sports that we're living in

– Greg in Omaha writes: I am an assistant coach on my son’s 4th grade tackle football team, and we had to reschedule practice tonight because of storms in Omaha. We reset for later this week and a couple of parents chimed in that it would be heard for their kids to attend because basketball practice is starting this week. I have so many questions: Why is basketball practicing in September? Is that a winter sport? What do they do at basketball practice, hold hands and practice flopping?I’m sure these are unanswerable, but we need to go back to a time where kids could be in one sport per season and quite frankly basketball bleeding into football season is borderline blasphemous in Nebraska.

Kinsey: Why are teams holding 4th grade basketball practice in September? Because the boys will fall behind, Greg. We all know that. If you're not playing football, baseball and basketball this time of year, there's no way your 4th grader will be successful in life.

Modern parents look at social media all day long. On Instagram and Facebook, they see their friends' kids traveling across the country playing soccer and basketball. Suburban parents don't want to be seen as failures. They don't want other parents to look at them like they're the losers.

Here's my test for if your kids are falling behind: Take them to the local high school football game. If your son or daughter can find 3-4 friends to run around with at the games without you, your kids are going to be successful. If your 4th grader can disappear during the game and come back at halftime for concession money, rest easy. You're doing fine.

Cracker Barrel is jumping the gun

• Paul B in California reports from Tennessee: Visiting friends in the Nashville area and we went to Cracker Barrel in Hendersonville. Not only did they have Halloween in full swing, there were Christmas trees up as well. To add insult to Summer, they were playing Christmas Carol melodies over the Muzak system. By the way, it’s 85 degrees today.

Kinsey: Nope, never had it. Looks like the nearest location is in far western North Carolina or Lynchburg, VA. That's about eight hours from me. At least.

Seems like Jake Browning doesn't want to live the practice squad life, but at this point that's the best he's reasonably going to do outside of high school coaching.

Also, might need updates on old school SC favorites. Glory and Hildee were almost daily features, and I feel like we haven't seen either of them in a year or more.

Ladies are jonesing to start burning those pumpkin candles

• CF in Kansas emails: You may love summer but there are many of us who live for fall.  The cool nights sleeping with the bedroom window open, the bright blue sky, the beauty of the leaves as they change color, and of course FOOTBALL.  The highs are still in the 90's here in Kansas and I am pining for the cool crisp days of fall.
