Pat Ryan wins special election to represent New York's 19th District

Pat Ryan has defeated his Republican challenger, Marc Molinaro, in the special election race to represent New York's 19th Congressional District.

Ryan will now fill the seat formerly held by Antonio Delgado, the Democrat who resigned to become New York’s lieutenant governor this summer.

Ryan largely campaigned on abortion protections and will serve as representative for the district until 2023, when Delgado's term concludes.

In addition to his election to the House through Tuesday's special election, Ryan is seeking a full term in the House. He was on the Democratic primary ballot to represent the state's new 18th District, a seat abandoned by Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y. He won that primary race by a landslide and will now face off against GOP nominee Colin Schmitt in November.

The race was called by The Associated Press.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praises Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney following primary loss

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised Democrat New York Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney following the latter's primary loss to Congressman Jerry Nadler in the race for New York's 12th Congressional District.

“During her three decades in the House, Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney has been a deeply respected leader in our Caucus and a champion for integrity.  House Democrats are grateful for Chairwoman Maloney’s tenacious leadership.  Her longtime public service will be profoundly missed in the Congress and by her constituents and the country," Pelosi wrote in a statement.

"At the helm of the powerful Committee on Oversight and Reform, Chairwoman Maloney has worked to honor our Founder’s vision of checks and balances: leading the Congress’s charge against corruption, corporate greed and abuses of power.  Under her leadership, the Committee has taken on special interests — from the gun lobby to Big Pharma to the financial sector and more — to fight for the people’s interest.  As former Chair of the Joint Economic Committee, she understood and elevated the priorities of the American people – strengthening the Congress’s work to deliver progress for all Americans.  Chairwoman Maloney has been a prolific and effective legislator.  Americans will continue to benefit from laws she authored to protect credit card users.  New York families salute her fight to secure full health benefits for the heroic first responders on September 11th," she wrote.

“Congratulations to Chairman Jerry Nadler on prevailing in the election.  For three decades in the House, Chairman Nadler has been a commanding force for freedom and justice: whether protecting our children from gun violence, fighting for civil rights for all or defending our Democracy.  His leadership has been essential to advancing many of our key priorities For The People, whether welcoming immigrants to our country, protecting a woman’s right to choose or passing voting rights legislation.  Our Caucus, the Congress and the Country will greatly benefit from his continued leadership," she added.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) chair, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y., admitted Sunday that his decision to meddle in the Michigan Republican primary, in which the DCCC poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into boosting a pro-Donald Trump candidate, could raise some "difficult moral questions."

Maloney was criticized by Republicans and Democrats alike after the DCCC spent $425,000 on an ad boosting Trump-endorsed John Gibbs, who ended up winning the primary against incumbent Republican Rep. Peter Meijer, who voted to impeach the former president after the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

Polls for Oklahoma run-off elections close

The polls in Oklahoma have come to close after voters cast their ballots in the state's run-off elections.

Oklahoma Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe announced his retirement earlier this year, making way for a special election.

Trump-endorsed candidate Rep. Markwayne Mullin is taking on T.W. Shannon in the GOP run-off for the open Oklahoma Senate seat. The winner of the primary race will move on to the special general election in November to face off against Democrat Kendra Horn.

Democrats Jason Bollinger and Madison Horn are also competing in a runoff election as they seek the Democratic nomination for Senate. The winner of that race will advance to the November general election where they will attempt to unseat incumbent GOP Sen. James Lankford.

Oklahoma’s 2nd Congressional District is also seeing a run-off election where Avery Frix and Josh Brecheen are battling for the seat after advancing through the primary in June. The seat is currently held by Rep. Mullin who did not run for re-election and instead launched a bid for the Senate.

How religion, abortion will affect the midterm elections in Florida among crucial Hispanic voters

With 26.5% of Florida's total population consisting of Latino voters, according to the 2020 Census, candidates in the Sunshine State have historically depended on the Hispanic vote to push them ahead in both primary and general elections. Democratic and Republican strategists alike say Tuesday's election will come down to the state of the economy and crime.

However, the U.S. Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade in June could affect Latino voters as they confront the issue of abortion, with a growing number of Hispanics moving away from the left.

"When we talk about Hispanic voters, it’s important to emphasize that there isn’t a single ‘Hispanic community,’ but rather many diverse communities across the country," Giancarlo Sopo, founder of Visto Media and head of Hispanic advertising for former President Trump’s 2020 campaign, told Fox News Digital. "There has clearly been a shift both nationally and in key regions."

The recent Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization landmark decision that eliminated the federal right to abortion and handed down the power of legalizing the procedure to the states has become a hot-button topic in recent months, especially within lower socioeconomic communities.

"We know that Latino voters in Florida, just like voters across the country, support access to safe, legal abortion and want to be able to control their own health care decisions without political interference," Alexandra Mandado, CEO and president of Florida Planned Parenthood PAC, told Fox News Digital in an emailed statement. "Unfortunately, Latino communities face disproportionate barriers to care due to centuries of systemic discrimination, barriers that are only likely to get worse with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, including Florida’s abortion ban."

Demings leads Rubio in heated Senate race, DeSantis remains voters' top choice for governor, poll

Demings, the former chief of police in Orlando and current congresswoman, was ahead in the Aug. 23 Democratic Senate primary with 80% support. Candidates Candace Daniel and Robert Willis lagged with less than 5% of the vote.

Oklahoma Senate runoff: T.W. Shannon seeks upset of Trump-backed Rep. Markwayne Mullin

The Oklahoma Republican  runoff for Senate Tuesday is between two candidates who both pitch themselves as the America First candidate, and both accuse each other of being too political — though one has been in state government for much of his career, and the other has been in Congress for a decade.

Rep. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., secured former President Trump's endorsement just ahead of the Oklahoma primary in June, where he gained 43% of the vote, short of the 50% majority he needed to lock up the nomination in the deep-red state where the Republican nominee is expected to triumph in the November midterm elections . The runner-up in the primary, former state House speaker T.W. Shannon, sees his momentum growing as he crisscrosses the state, visiting towns where he says no politician has stopped before.

Though polls have shown Mullin with double a double-digit lead in the race, Shannon believes it will come down to turnout, and that voters will recognize what he sees as the heart of the race: Does Oklahoma want to vote someone into the Senate whose been in the Washington, D.C. "swamp" for a decade already?

"The problem with being in the swamp for 10 years — after you've been there for a long time, it doesn't stink to you," Shannon told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview. "We've got a country to save, and in order to save people we've got to send people who are willing to fight not just for the sake of fighting, but who will stand up and be a disruptor, and will remind this country of what made it great to start with — capitalism, Christianity and the Constitution."

Demings looks to emerge from Florida Senate primary race, eyeing November clash with Rubio

Florida's primary elections are taking place, but by listening to Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., one might think it was already general election season.

Demings is running for Senate, facing off against former Florida House member Brian Rush, former immigration lawyer and Justice Department Special Counsel William Sanchez, and Ricardo De La Fuente in the Democratic race, but her sights are firmly set on incumbent Republican Sen. Marco Rubio.

"My opponent believes in abortion bans with no exceptions, even in the case of rape, incest and sexual abuse. That’s why Marco Rubio needs to go," Demings tweeted the night before the primary. "It’s time."

Throughout her campaign, Demings has looked ahead to November and a matchup with Rubio, who will automatically be running in the general election because the GOP primary was canceled.

New York special election latest test of Democrats' messaging on abortion

New York  special election on Tuesday will put the Democratic Party's abortion campaign playbook to the test as they seek to counter Republican messaging on the economy and inflation to hold a Democratic seat with the November election just 11 weeks away.

The matchup in the Empire State's 19th Congressional District, which covers New York's Catskills and mid-Hudson Valley regions, features Ulster County Executive Patrick Ryan, a Democrat who has campaigned on a promise to protect abortion access, and Republican Marc Molinaro, the Dutchess County executive who has focused on inflation, gas prices and crime.

Both Ryan and Molinaro are seeking to fill the seat formerly held by Antonio Delgado, the Democrat who resigned to become New York’s lieutenant governor this summer. The remainder of Delgado's term is up in 2023.

In the final week of campaigning to represent the 19th District, which then presidential candidate Joe Biden carried by less than 2 points in the 2020 election, Ryan, an Army veteran, said during a campaign rally in Woodstock that he hopes to "send another message as the national spotlight starts to shift" to Democrats.

John Wood withdraws from Missouri Senate race

John Wood has announced he will no longer seek to represent Missouri in the U.S. Senate.

In a statement released Tuesday from his campaign, Wood said, “I made the decision to run for the United States Senate when Eric Greitens was the favorite for the Republican nomination. That would have been unacceptable, embarrassing, and dangerous for my party, my state, and my Country."

“Circumstances have changed. While I think I could have beaten Eric Greitens, Missouri no longer faces the risk of Greitens as our next U.S. Senator. While I have significant differences of opinion with both the Republican and Democratic nominees, it has become evident there is not a realistic path to victory for me as an independent candidate," he added. “Today, I am announcing that I am withdrawing my candidacy for the United States Senate."

Wood was running as an independent in the race and told Fox News Digital in July that he would caucus with Republicans if elected.

Dem outsider seeks 'generational change' in NYC House race, says Nadler, Maloney 'more of the same'

Suraj Patel, a Democratic candidate vying for the U.S. House seat representing New York's 12th Congressional District, says "generational change" is on the ballot in the party's heated Tuesday primary that pits him against two career members of Congress.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Patel described his opponents, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y. and Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., as "more of the same" and the "status quo," arguing that their "ineffectiveness" throughout decades of serving as elected officials was proof that he was the only candidate in the race with actual plans to address the biggest issues facing Americans.

"Look, generational change is on the ballot. Two candidates in this race, Maloney and Nadler, are offering more of the same, status quo," Patel, a 38-year-old attorney, said when asked about his chances of pulling off a surprise victory on Tuesday.

Democrat showdowns, progressive challenges headline primaries in Florida, New York

A number of high-profile showdowns between Democrats are taking place on Tuesday as voters head to the polls for primary elections in Florida and New York.

In Florida, Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried is facing off against current Congressman Charlie Crist in the Democrat gubernatorial primary to determine who will take on incumbent Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis in the November general election.

Most polls indicate Crist, a Republican turned Democrat who once served as Florida's governor while still a member of the GOP, is leading Fried in a heated race that has seen sharp attacks from both sides.

In New York, long-time Democrat members of Congress Jerry Nadler and Carolyn Maloney are being forced to compete for a single seat in New York's newly drawn 12th Congressional District after their respective New York City districts were combined in the state's redistricting process following the 2020 census.

Both have served in Congress since the early 1990s and are facing a challenge from a third Democrat, 38-year-old lawyer Suraj Patel , who is calling for "generational change" and a new approach to representing the district rather than the "status-quo."

Polls show Nadler leading the race, with Maloney in second and Patel in third, although each consistently receives support from a sizable chunk of the respondents.

Also in New York, incumbent Democrat Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney is facing a challenge from the left in state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi in the state's 17th Congressional District.

Biaggi, a proponent of the "Defund the Police" movement, has received endorsements from "Squad" member Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and former far-left 2018 Democrat gubernatorial candidate, Cynthia Nixon.

Recent polls have indicated Maloney, who currently represents the 18th Congressional District and is considered a moderate Democrat, is leading Biaggi by double digits; however, the latter is appearing to hope for a similar upset as that of Ocasio-Cortez over then-Democrat Congressman Joe Crowley in 2018.
