NYPD boosts mosque patrols after deadly shooting attack at San Diego Islamic Center
The New York Police Department (NYPD) said Monday it is increasing patrols around mosques across New York City following the deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego.
“The NYPD is closely monitoring reports of an active shooter at the Islamic Center of San Diego,” the department wrote on X. “While there is currently no known nexus to NYC or specific threats to NYC houses of worship, out of an abundance of caution, the NYPD is increasing deployments to mosques across the city.”
The increased police presence comes just weeks after NYPD officers responded to protests and unrest outside Park East Synagogue in Manhattan, where anti-Israel demonstrators clashed with police near barricades surrounding the synagogue.
Following those incidents, city officials and Jewish leaders called for stronger protections around houses of worship amid growing concerns over religiously motivated violence and intimidation.
