During Versace's inaugural Pre-Fall runway show on Dec. 2 in New York City, the fashion house presented a modern incarnation of the barely-there safety-pin dress famously worn by Elizabeth Hurley in the mid-'90s — and it left the fashion world chattering as it headed down the runway.
The Italian fashion house threw the star-studded soiree on what would have been late founder Gianni Versace's 72nd birthday at the American Stock Exchange Building, Harper’s Bazaar reports. According to the outlet, models sported ensembles that paid homage to the Big Apple, as well as reboots of some of the brand’s most famous dresses.

The so-called “safety pin dress” was first made famous by Hurley 24 years ago; the English actress and model wore the original look from Versace’s spring 1994 collection to the premiere of “Four Weddings and a Funeral” that same year with her then-boyfriend Hugh Grant and became an overnight sensation.

While the frock is back with a right mesh sleeve and slightly more conservative pinning, some Twitter users just couldn’t quite embrace the nostalgic spirit of Versace’s re-run.

“Run out of ideas, methinks,” one cynic wrote of the news.
“Millennials love nostalgia. I’m so over it—where’s the fresh, new material?” another agreed.
“But no one will ever wear it like Elizabeth Hurley,” one fan of the star chimed in.
As noted by Page Six Style, during the Pre-Fall show, Versace also sent the notorious navel-plunging dress made iconic by Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammys down the runway in a new, Gianni-inspired heart print pattern. The look was even modeled by Amber Valetta, who first wore the dress on the runway in 1999.
