Have you ever looked up at your chandelier and noticed that it was covered in dust? It might be the focal point of your dining room, but it sure isn’t easy to clean. So how can you thoroughly dust and polish the chandelier without getting dust all over everything else? We asked Julie Edelman, “The Accidental Housewife,” how she tackles the task, and she had an interesting response.

Edelman opens an umbrella and hooks it to the bottom of her chandelier to catch all the dust that she blows off with her blow dryer. “ I know that some of you think that opening an umbrella indoors is bad luck … not so," she says. "In this case, it’s actually good luck because you won’t be messing up everything in your house and getting dust all over the place.”

In addition to an umbrella, you’ll need a few more items to clean your chandelier:

  • Blow dryer
  • Pastry brush
  • Hand mitt
  • Step ladder

Instructions:1. Open your umbrella and hang it (upside-down) from the bottom of your chandelier.2. Turn on your blow dryer and climb your step ladder.3. Aim you dryer down and blow off all of the dust from your chandelier.4. With your pastry brush, dust off nooks and crannies your blow dryer may have missed.5. With your mitt, polish the light bulbs (make sure they are turned off).6. Dispose of the dust your umbrella has collected.
