Matte Makeup Tips From an Emmy-Winning Master Makeup Artist

The shimmering, bronzed glow of summer has washed out of season like the warm tide. Fall is here and we’ll be soon prepping for winter — which means it’s time to take on a gorgeous new look for the chilly months to come. Currently, it’s all about matte for a classic take on flawless skin and makeup to complement the season. The key to perfectly matte skin is to: Analyze which skin type you have. If you are dry, choose an appropriate moisturizer to keep your skin soft and supple. If you have combination skin, opt for a moisturizer that has a combination of moisturizer and oil control in one. If your skin is more on the oily side, try a light moisturizer that tackles your hydrating needs, and features balancing ingredients to control oil throughout the day. Also, I always use a primer while accomplishing the matte look to ensure the makeup will last for hours while also offering the added benefits of shine control, antioxidants, SPF, and even wrinkle/pore minimizing. This is essential in my book. Correct and perfect. Choose a concealer to hide any trouble spots or under-eye areas and use it sparingly. For foundation, choose a coverage appropriate to your skin needs and then blot the T-zone area. Target your focus. Who says your entire face has to be matte? To really tackle this season's matte look, choose a feature you want to enhance. This will better allow you to capture the trend like a pro and make it uniquely you.

When it comes to fall, you can never go wrong with a seductive red pout, and this season, it's all about the "just bitten" look. For a quick stain, try one of the latest shades from your favorite line, apply across your lips, and then gently pat with your index finger. Make sure you outline your lips in either a matching concealer or concealing pencil to create the perfect shape. Daytime: I like Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Crème Lip Colour in “Destinee” because it goes on smoothly and evenly, which is exactly what you want, especially when on-the-go. Nighttime: Going for a more smoldering look to make heads turn? Be daring with a deep, rich red, which suits anyone. My pick is Kevyn Aucoin's Matte Lip Color in "Everlasting.”

Seize the moment with a matte eye balanced with the right amount of illuminating powder to draw light and diffuse fine lines while also enlivening the eye. Smoldering grays blended from lash to crease really capture the mystery and sexiness of fall. Try Chantecaille's mustang-inspired palette in “Wild Horses,” which can easily transcend from day to night with its deep blue grey. It's also got major lasting power.

When it comes to your overall face, create a palette of perfection. Instead of pressing powder and mattifying the entire face, stick with the T-zone and blend outwards with a matte powder that's skin perfecting and pore minimizing. A slight glow, not a shimmer, is crucial to preventing the dry, aging look that overly matte makeup tends to create. Allow your skin tone to show through while controlling oil with a translucent powder to set and touch-up when needed. My latest indulgence? Givenchy's Teint Couture Long-Wearing Compact Foundation. It includes perfecting and illuminating dual powders that easily cover you as a powder foundation or a fantastic highlighting/concealing touch-up powder for on-the-go. The compact itself is enough to draw eyes — so chic!  Which matte will you choose to be the new fall you?
