Latin America makes its mark in the 2015 Guinness World Records

From the largest enchilada to the world’s highest suspension bridge to the most likes on Facebook, the region is ripe with record setters who go above and beyond the normal to have their names in the famed record book.

Menahem Asher Silva Vargas has spent nearly 15 years hoarding all things related to British author J.K. Rowling's young-adult wizard-fantasy series, which spawned eight blockbuster films. Guinness World Records officially recognized it as the world No. 1, at 3,097 pieces. The old mark was 807. (AP)

In January of this year, the Baluarte Bicentennial Bridge in Mexico, which is supported by 152 steel suspenders and has a central, cable-stayed span of 1,705 feet, a total length of 3,685 feet and a width of 65 feet, received a Guinness record certifying it as the world's highest bridge. (Efe)

About 12,000 people attended a yoga class in Mexico City’s Zócalo. The event was dubbed “the largest yoga class in the world” but organizers say they never intended that reaction.

In January 2012,  more than 100 residents of Monterrey, the capital of the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, prepared a 459-foot ""world's longest tamale." There were 10,000 pieces of the Mexican dish, which was 35 inches wide. (Efe)

In November 2011, the Mexican city of Querétaro set a new record with the world’s largest carnitas taco, measuring about 240 feet long and weighing 330,000 pounds. (azteca noticias)

More than 180 Colombians prepared a 606.6-meter (664-yard) pound cake in Bogotá, setting a Guinness record for the world's biggest pound cake and easily breaking the old mark of 500 meters. (Efe)

The mouth of the Catatumbo River, which sits at the southern end of Lake Maracaibo in the western Venezuelan state of Zulia, recently claimed the Guinness World Record for highest number of lightning per square kilometer per year – notching an impressive 3,600 flashes per hour or 1.2 million a year.
