Georgia man detained, banned from Costco for refusing to leave after son took his mask off : Report

The man was cited with disorderly conduct after he reportedly refused to leave the Costco when asked by management

A man in Georgia was arrested over the weekend after his 18-year-old son reportedly refused to wear a mask inside a Costco, according to recent reports.

Cory Wayland was reportedly detained and cited with disorderly conduct by the Cumming Police Department on Saturday, the Forsyth County News reported Monday.

Wayland and his son had been shopping at the Costco in Cumming, Georgia, when Wayland’s son reportedly took his mask off because he needed “to breathe a little bit.”

Wayland's adult son was not identified in reports, but a video of the arrest was posted on TikTok by an Andrew Wayland.

Costco recently updated its policy to require face masks for all customers and staff. People who are unable to wear masks are required to wear a face shield, according to the new policy.

Wayland was not arrested because his son wasn’t wearing a mask, Cumming police Chief David Marsh told Forsyth County News. Instead, he was detained “based on his conduct on the scene” and because he reportedly refused to leave Costco after the manager asked him to.

The News did not identify Wayland's son or provide an age.

“It didn’t have anything to do with the mask other than that’s what prompted the store to call us,” Marsh told the newspaper. “We certainly don’t arrest people for not wearing masks. That’s not something that we enforce. It didn’t have anything to do with that and it had everything to do with his behavior throughout that investigation and at the Costco.”

The Cumming Police Department did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment and Fox News was unable to reach Wayland.

According to Forsyth County News, the police were called because the Costco manager asked to have Wayland “escorted off the property” after he reportedly started arguing over the mask policy.

When police arrived at the scene, they reportedly asked Wayland for his identification, which he refused.

After that, police arrested Wayland, put him in handcuffs and placed him in the back of a police cruiser, the newspaper reported.

Police eventually cited Wayland with disorderly conduct and released him. According to Forsyth County News, Wayland and his son were “both issued criminal trespass warnings” and have been banned from returning to the store.

Wayland’s son posted two clips of the event on TikTok this week and the first video has been viewed more than 3.8 million times.
