Bride gets mixed reaction after telling pregnant bridesmaid to stop holding belly in wedding photos

Redditors were torn, with some feeling the bride was completely justified, and others accusing her of being insensitive toward her friend, who may have been feeling self-conscious.  (iStock)

A confused newlywed is seeking validation on Reddit after upsetting a pregnant bridesmaid at her wedding.

The woman, who got married a month ago, explained that her bridesmaid insisted on cradling her own baby bump in the wedding pics, despite being told not to more than once — and the new bride says her friend is still “pissed” at her over the incident.

The Redditor, posting under the name “a—h---bride,” first shared the story early last week.

“I got married three weeks ago and one of my bridesmaids is about 7 months pregnant (let's call her Kate),” the Redditor wrote. “Kate's belly was easily accommodated into the dress style because it had quite a flowy skirt with a fitted bust,” she claimed.

When it came time to take pics, however, the bride says she noticed her friend “deliberately holding her belly so it was really obvious” she was pregnant.

“I asked her to stop holding her hands to show off her belly and to just pose like everyone else,” she said. “I had to remind her a few more times before we'd finished taking the wedding party photos.”

After returning from her honeymoon, the bride said she hadn’t heard from “Kate,” despite the two texting often and being fairly close. She then heard from another bridesmaid that “Kate is still pissed at me,” allegedly because the bridesmaid thought Kate had been ”trying to make her look fat” in the wedding photos, instead of merely pregnant.

“Now I'm annoyed because I paid a lot of money for a wedding photo shoot, not maternity pics. But I don't know, am I the a—h---?” she asked the online forum’s commenters.

Reactions were split, with many taking the bride’s side.

“Those are your wedding photos, and there is absolutely no reason someone should be deliberately showing off their 'baby bump' to take away from the bride in a photo,” one wrote.

"It is your day and people are there to celebrate your marriage, [they’re] not there to celebrate her being pregnant,” another added.

Many also felt the bridesmaid was just self-conscious about her own appearance, and cradled her belly in order to avoid looking “fat” in the photos — but they still sided with the bride.

“She very likely felt self-conscious about her belly … But because it was your day and your dollar she should have chilled out and understood,” a commenter stated.

Even still, plenty of readers felt the bride was out of line, not only for requesting her bridesmaid refrain from holding her belly, but also for calling her out in front of the rest of the wedding party.

“It seems like you’re not very sympathetic to your friend here, and that’s why I think you’re [wrong] on this one… I do think your friend is right to be upset,” wrote one critic.

“Did you call Kate out in front of everyone for posing like this? If she's already feeling self-conscious about how she looks in the dress you chose for her and then you call her out publicly, you're really being a bridezilla,” another chimed in.
