With immigration already a white hot issue, one company thought it would be a good idea to create a game where you smuggle animated immigrants across the border.

Apple had a different idea.

The software giant turned down Owlchemy Labs, a Boston-based company that developed the iPhone game in which the player drives a truck full of immigrants across the U.S.-Mexico border while trying to keep the human cargo safely on the truck.

Success is measured in the number of immigrants who make it across the border.

Developer Alex Schwartz said Owlchemy Labs couldn't give details about why "Smuggle Truck: Operation Immigrant" was rejected, except to say that it was content-related.

Developers had previously stated that the game was created to bring attention to immigration issues.

"As we lived through a painful 12 months of our friend struggling through the absurd legal minefield that surrounds U.S. immigration, we felt that we should create a game that touches on the issue," a statement by developers read on the Owlchemy website

Nonetheless, many were outraged that "Smuggle Truck" existed in the first place.

"This 'game' pokes fun and trivializes the harsh reality of our current immigration policy that leads to people putting their lives at stake and embarking on dangerous border crossings," Thanu Yakupitiyage of the New York Immigration Coalition told the New York Daily News in an interview about the game.

The game can still be downloaded on PCs and Macs, and includes a "legal mode" that portrays immigrants sitting in a waiting room for 20 years.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
