4 Ways to Lose That Cellulite

Nobody likes cellulite, and unfortunately, removing it doesn't come easy or cheap. To find out about some of the latest options available, we asked different doctors to fill us in on four of the most popular procedures. From topical creams to lasers, have a look to see what — if any — treatment might be right for you.

  • TOPICAL CREAM
Many topical creams on the market utilize caffeine that cause the blood vessels to constrict and decrease the water content of the fat. Other products are simply moisturizers that hydrate the overlying skin. These products may result in an improvement in the appearance of cellulite, but the results are temporary, at best. To really treat cellulite, you must treat the constricting bands of tissue beneath the skin that are causing the fat to appear clumped and the skin to appear dimpled.   -- Matthew R. Schulman, M.D. board certified plastic surgeon and Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine

  • RADIESSE For CELLULITE
Radiesse™ is an injectable filler that was popular in facial procedures and is now being used to correct the appearance of cellulite on the butt and thighs. It works by actually smoothing the skin and adding volume to the butt and thighs so the dimpling appearance of cellulite is not so apparent. The ideal patient is one who has moderate to severe cellulite, causing significant dents or divots. Unlike other treatments, the results are noticeable immediately. There is no downtime associated with Radiesse injections, although patients are advised not to put pressure on the treated area for two hours post treatment.  The cost for this treatment is approximately $900-$1800, depending on the number of syringes used. The average a patient can be treated with one to two syringes. Results can last up to two years.  -- Joseph Eviatar, MD, board certified Cosmetic Surgeon at Chelsea Eye and Cosmetic Surgery Associates

  • REACTION from Viora
REACTION from Viora utilizes advanced radiofrequency technology to reduce cellulite. By delivering heat energy to the deep layers of the skin and fat, it causes disruption and rupture of the fat cells, softens the constricting bands that cause the dimpled appearance, increases blood flow so that liquefied fat can be eliminated from the body, and tightens the overlying skin for a smoother appearance. This is the first and only system that specifically targets all these causes of cellulite, and not just the fat. The recommended treatment is one session per week for six weeks. You can safely treat multiple areas at one time and the treatments are painless — it feels like a hot deep massage.  There is no downtime and each session takes 30-60 minutes, depending on the size of the area(s) treated.  The cost is around $3000 for the recommended package of six treatment sessions. While this reduction is permanent, the person's predisposition to form cellulite still remains. This means that people will continue to form new cellulite and we recommend occasional maintenance sessions every 3-6 months. --Matthew R. Schulman, M.D. board certified plastic surgeon and Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine

  • Cellulaze
Cellulaze is one of the most talked about procedures of the season. With its FDA clearance at the end of last year, Cellulaze became the first ever FDA approved one-time treatment for the reduction of cellulite. Cellulaze works by placing local anesthetic under the skin of the affected area. After this, one or two tiny poke incisions are made to introduce the laser fiber to the undersurface of the cellulite. The laser works by disrupting bands that cause dimpling, melting small pockets of fat, and tightening skin simultaneously. Results typically appear after approximately three to four months and show continued improvement for up to two years. The cost of Cellulaze is on average of $5000 per area. -- Mir Joffrey, MD, Chicago-based cosmetic surgeon.
