Second Meningitis Case Reported at Pennsylvania College

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A second case of bacterial meningitis has been reported on the campus of Lehigh University.

School officials say they've handed out more than 4,000 doses of antibiotics in response to the reported cases of the potentially deadly infection.

A female student was hospitalized last week after attending a fraternity party. A male freshman was also hospitalized and receiving treatment on Sunday.

Bacterial meningitis is a potentially fatal infection of the central nervous system.

Meningitis is typically spread by saliva or close, prolonged exposure with an infected person. Symptoms include fever, severe headache, lethargy, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting and rash

Lehigh is a private university in Bethlehem serving approximately 4,700 undergraduate students.
