Parents abandon baby born with reverse limbs

The one-year-old boy named Wang Sanjin was abandoned by his own parents at birth because of the defects which have left his hands and legs reversed at their elbow and knee joints. The condition was considered so bad that Sanjin’s dad, from Zhumadian City in Central China’s Henan Province, said he wanted nothing to do with the boy and that he would rather have another child. But Sanjin’s grandmother Zhou Xuelian could not bear to simply cast the child out, so she brought him back to her own home and raised her with her husband. In the 15 months since Sanjin’s birth, his dad has not visited once or provided any form of financial support, while his mum is as a migrant worker in another city. Zhou and her husband, who are in their 60s and 70s, make a living by collecting and selling recyclable waste, and they are hoping to crowd-fund Sanjin’s treatment so he can potentially live a normal and independent life in the future. Doctors have told Zhou that surgery to correct Sanjin’s bones would cost more than 300,000 RMB (34,642 GBP) – an amount she called "astronomical". But with so many touching stories of crowdfunded medical miracles, the woman is hoping one can be performed on her grandson as well. She was quoted as saying: "My husband and I are getting on now. Sanjin’s granddad is in his 70s and I’m in my 60s. Who knows how long we can keep raising him for?"
