Naked Juice company settles lawsuit against ‘all natural’ claims

Beverage company Naked Juice has settled a class-action lawsuit in California for $9 million.

The juice company, owned by Pepsi Co Inc., was accused of using genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in some of its products, despite the company’s claim that their products were “all natural.”

As a result of the settlement, consumers who purchased Naked Juices between September 27, 2007 and August 19, 2013 can claim payments of up to $75 with proof of purchase or $45 without proof of purchase. Flavors named in the lawsuit include Green Machine, Mighty Mango and Protein Zone, among others.

Naked Juice denies the claims made against it and said the company plans to hire a third party group to verify its non-GMO status.

"Our juices and smoothies are made with all-natural fruits and vegetables — with no added sugar and no preservatives," a company spokeswoman said in a statement.

"In some products, we also include an added boost of vitamins. Naked juice and smoothies will continue to be labeled ‘non-GMO,’ and until there is more detailed regulatory guidance around the word 'natural' ― we've chosen not to use 'All Natural' on our packaging."
