Man Dies Near Finish Line of LA Half Marathon

A 40-year-old man died after collapsing near the finish line of the Los Angeles Rock 'n' Roll half marathon Sunday, authorities said.

Race officials declined to release the man's name, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss, and our heartfelt sympathies go out to the runner's family and loved ones," said Dr. Lewis Maharam, medical director of the 13.1-mile (21km) race.

"The family has asked for their privacy during this difficult time," Maharam said. "Out of respect for their request, we will have no further comment."

At about 9:30am local time—about two hours into the race—Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics performed CPR on the man after he collapsed on Olympic Boulevard, in downtown LA, before taking him to a nearby hospital.

The man's death was the only serious health issue in the event, which attracted more than 8,000 runners, Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott said.
