Penn Jillette surprised fans with his shocking 105-pound weight loss transformation going from 330 to 225 pounds. The 6’7” magician told People that he completely altered his lifestyle after poor health sent him to the hospital.

“I was on six very powerful meds to bring the blood pressure down,” Jillette, 60, told People. Doctors told him that losing weight would help bring his blood pressure under control and added that if he could get below 230 pounds he could possibly be taken off medications all together.

Jillette welcomed the challenge and his dramatic weight loss only took four month achieve, which begs the question; is it safe to lose this much weight in such a short amount of time?

Dr. Sue Decotiis a medical weight loss specialist in New York City says the answer is not only yes but it’s actually encouraged if done under the supervision of a physician.

Decotiis told FoxNews.com that after six months of dieting, our bodies go into defense mode assuming the loss is involuntary. This is called adaptive thermogenesis. When this occurs your metabolic rate drops and your appetite grows in order to keep whatever weight remains. At this point, a strict exercise regimen in conjunction with FDA-approved appetite suppressants are used to maintain the low body weight.

While it is beneficial to slim down quickly it’s vital that you do so properly. Dr. Decotiis said that it’s important to maintain a low-calorie diet that will help you lose fat and not muscle. She recommends that patients stay hydrated and eat foods that are rich in nutrients and protein.

Dr. Decotiis adds that people should be wary of where food comes from and try to eat organic. For example, she said stick to grass-fed cows for dairy and meat for a good source of protein. Also, fruits and vegetables that are filled with chemicals and pesticides can actually cause a person to pack on the pounds.

Decotiis recommends having three well-balanced meals a day including a protein-rich breakfast and avoid grazing. She also said that when going through a strict diet you should have consider supplements but, like meals, know where they are coming from as some may be tainted or filled with hormones.

Before making any lifestyle changes, especially when it concerns diet and weight loss consult your physician.
