Doctor: Clot Possible Cause for Teen Football Player's Death

An expert says a blood clot or embolism are among the possible causes of death for an Edmond North High School football player.

Ryan Smith died Wednesday, a day after he broke his leg in practice. The Oklahoman reports the cause of death has not yet been determined by the state Medical Examiner's office.

Edmond School District officials have not released details on the nature of the 16-year-old boy's broken leg.

Dr. Arya Nick Shamie, an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of California-Los Angeles, told The Oklahoman that a fat embolism or blood clot can be caused by a severe broken bone and could have contributed to Smith's death.
