Blue Cheese Recalled Due to Listeria Concerns
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Fair Oaks Dairy Products, LLC issued a voluntary recall of Fair Oaks Royal Blue Cheese purchased on or after September 25 because it may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.
The food company said that a small quantity of the cheese was sold at its Fair Oaks Dairy store in Northwest Indiana, central Indiana and to several other stores through distributors. The product is in one-third to one-half-pound packages in royal blue foil with the label “Fair Oaks Royal Blue Cheese.”
The company contacted the Food and Drug Administration and issued the recall to consumers in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. No illnesses have been reported to date.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Officials are asking consumers who purchased the brand on the dates in question to return the product to stores in order to receive a refund. They estimated that less than 20 pounds of blue cheese is involved in the recall.
Listeria is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
If you are ill, or experience any symptoms of listeriosis after eating possibly infected foods, you should contact your physician. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal distress, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The incubation period for the infection can range from three to 70 days.
