Forget the muffins.

This old-fashioned dish is certain to rise on the top of your favorite foods list, especially when you add loads of chocolate into the mix.

“If you’ve never had a popover before, it might look a little strange to you,” explains blogger Emma Chapman of A Beautiful Mess. “I guess they kind of look like bread cupcakes, huh? Well, they’re not. They are very light and airy, as you can probably guess, but they also have a slightly eggy/custard taste. To me, it’s similar to French toast.”

What makes this dish a must-bake for any occasion? Not only are they simple to prepare, but popovers can be savory or sweet with spices, ripe fruits, and yes, even chocolate.

“This gives them the ability to be served nearly any time of the day if you want,” says Chapman. “You can make a cinnamon version for breakfast, served with butter and maple syrup. You can make a chedder-and-chives version to serve alongside soup for lunch. Or you can add a little orange zest, top these with dark chocolate glaze, and just like magic, you’ve got dessert.”

For those who need their sweet fix (and really, who doesn't?), this is the one popover recipe you should know try.
