Guacamole coming to all US Subway locations

Subway lovers flock to the chain for the plentiful sandwich toppers. And now sub fans will have one more item to choose from—guacamole.

On May 1, Subway will offer guacamole at chain locations nationwide, reports the Huffington Post. The premium spread will cost 75 cents extra on a six-inch sub and $1.50 for a Footlong. The chain is rolling out a special sandwich—the Chipotle Chicken Melt with Guacamole—to showcase the topper, but it will be available as an add-on to any sandwich.

The chain has offered avocado seasonally for the last four years at select stores across the country. Guacamole, like avocados will only be available during the summer—plus a “couple months” at the beginning or end, depending on availability.

Thanks to the popularity of Mexican food-- and Chipotle-- America’s taste for avocado has skyrocketed in the past decade. Today, the average American eats 5.8 pounds per year, compared to a little over one pound in 1999.

Though the majority of avocados consumed in the U.S. are grown internationally, California farmers will likely face an even more difficult time keeping pace with demand during the drought.
