There’s some good news if you're a Chiptole pork lover –but you're going to have to be patient.
The fast food chain said it has solved its supply problem after it removed a large pork supplier in January because it didn’t mean the company’s standards for humane treatment.
During Chipotle’s earnings call with investors on Tuesday, founder Steve Ells said the company has found a new supplier and is looking at using other cuts of pork.
“We believe we have found a new solution to help fill the gap with a new supplier," Ells said. "We’re encouraged by what we have seen so far.”
About one-third of the chain's restaurants will still be affected this spring and summer, Chipotle’s peak period.
But Chiptole spokesman Chris Arnold told The Huffington Post that "a significant number of restaurants" should have carnitas back on the menu in October, or in the third quarter, though there's no word on which locations may get them sooner. "We are now going to put carnitas in the places where we sell the most, and not rotate it," said Arnold.
The pork shortage is hurting sales by as much as 2 percent, the company said, and customers are looking forward to seeing the ‘No carnitas’ signs pasted up in store windows removed.
Chiptole dished out some bad news on Tuesday if you’re a Chipotle's beef lover. The company announced that it "undershot" the cost of beef inflation, so it will likely raise the prices of its steak and barbacoa offerings.
