$18 supermarket Scotch wins first-round category at World Whiskies Awards

Well, that’s unexpected.

An inexpensive bottle of supermarket Scotch has reportedly emerged victorious in the first round of the World Whiskies Awards, specifically in the “Scotch Blended 12 years & under” category.

Queen Margot Blended Scotch Whisky, which currently sells for 13.49 pounds, or just under $18, bested competitors in its category, including Johnnie Walker Black Label and Islay Mist, Forbes reported.

“The taste holds more barrel character, where a little concentration from time in cask gives wood spice length of finish,” the supermarket says. (Lidl.co.uk)

“Mellowed for eight long years in oak casks, this whisky is smooth with a rich sweetness and depth of flavour, leaving a warm, lingering finish,” reads a description of Queen Margot on Lidl.co.uk. “The soft aroma of fruit manifests itself as dried apricot and plum.

“The taste holds more barrel character, where a little concentration from time in cask gives wood spice length of finish,” adds the market.

The Drinks Report, which presents the World Whiskies Awards, is expected to announce more winners, including the winners of subsequent rounds, in late March.

“The award for Best Scotch Blended overall (round 2) as well as World’s Best Blended (round 3/final) will be announced on 28 March 2019 at the Whisky Magazine Award dinner in London and celebrated during Whisky Live which follows on from 29-30 March,” the organization confirmed to Forbes.
