Tragic Deaths

John Travolta and Kelly Preston's 16-year-old son Jett died on January 2, 2009 while the family vacationed in the Bahamas. The parents rode in the ambulance with their son to the hospital as efforts to revive him failed. (Travolta.com)

'Tonight Show' host Johnny Carson lost his son Richard on June 21, 1991, when he drove off of a cliff in California. Richard, a photographer, had apparently been taking photos when the accident occurred. Carson gave a moving tribute to Richard on the first show after his son's death. (AP)

Eric Clapton's four-year-old son Conor fell from the window of an 53-story building in New York City on March 20, 1991, while his mother, Lory del Santo, was visiting a friend's apartment. Clapton wrote the song "Tears in Heaven" about the tragedy. (AP)

Daniel Smith died on September 10, 2006, while visiting his mother Anna Nicole Smith in the hospital following the birth of his little sister, Danielynne. Pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht attributed his death to a lethal combination of methadone, Zoloft and Lexapro. Anna Nicole Smith followed her son the following year, dying February 8, 2007, of combined drug intoxication. (AP)

Elizabeth and Senator John Edwards' son Wade died in April 1996 when the Jeep he was driving from his Raleigh home to the family's beach house overturned. The Edwards had two more children when Elizabeth was 48 and 50, before she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. (AP)

Joseph "Reverend Run" Simmons of Run DMC lost daughter Victoria Anne shortly after she was born on September 26, 2006. His child with wife Justine Simmons had omphalocele, a condition where several organs remain outside of the body. (AP)

Soap opera actress Hunter Tylo's 19-year-old son Michael drowned in a pool in Nevada after reportedly suffering a "medical event" related to a seizure disorder. (AP)

Death Row Records founder Dr. Dre's 20-year old son Andre died on August 25, 2008, from an overdose of heroin and morphine. Andre was found by his mother at their L.A. home after spending a night out with friends. (AP)
