Then/Now: The Cast of 'M*A*S*H'

One of the most popular television series of all time, ‘M*A*S*H’ was spin-off of the Robert Altman movie (which was based on a book) about the Korean war. ‘M*A*S*H’ ran from 1972 to 1983, almost three times as long as the war it chronicled! Alda’s pre-‘M*A*S*H’ roles include ‘Paper Lion’ and ‘What’s My Line.’ He was nominated for 21 Emmy awards for his role as Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce, and won five. He was also the first person to win Emmy Awards for acting, writing and directing for the same series.

Now 73, Alda is still going strong. TV credits include an Emmy-winning turn on ‘The West Wing.’ He’s also been active in theater, winning a Tony award in 2005 for his role in ‘Glengarry Glen Ross.’ Overall, Alda has received 31 Emmy nominations, two Tony nominations, won seven People’s Choice Awards, six Golden Globes, three Directors Guild of America awards, and one Academy Award nomination, for ‘The Aviator’.  (AP)

A Princeton grad, Rogers served in the Navy and appeared on series like ‘Gunsmoke’ and ‘Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.’ before being cast as “Trapper John” McIntyre. 

Pernell Roberts played Trapper John in the ‘M*A*S*H’ spin-off, ‘Trapper John, M.D.’ but Rogers had his share of work, like TV show ‘Cagney and Lacey.’ Rogers (mostly) left acting for business, appearing regularly on Fox News Channel business shows like ‘Cashin’ In.’ Now 76, he is married to his second wife. Shows like ‘The Monkees’ helped Farrell land his best-known role, that of Captain B.J. Hunnicut.

Farrell, now 70, still works steadily in TV. His most recent appearance was on ‘Ghost Whisperer’ this year. The actor produced 1998 film ‘Patch Adams.’ He’s acted in ‘Law & Order: SVU,’ ‘Desperate Housewives,’ ‘Providence,’ ‘Superman,’ and ‘Matlock’ since his stint on ‘M*A*S*H.’ He is on his second marriage and has two children.  (AP)

Stevenson came from a political family; he was related to Vice President Adlai E. Stevenson. After doing theater and commercials, the actor appeared in ‘The Doris Day Show,’ which led to his being cast as Colonel Henry Blake. 

After ‘M*A*S*H,’ Stevenson had his own show, ‘The McLean Stevenson Show.’ He also appeared in series like ‘In the Beginning’ and ‘Diff’rent Strokes.’ The actor died at age 68. He was on his second marriage and had two children.  (REUTERS)

Before Swit won two Emmys for her portrayal of Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan, she did theater and had small roles in TV shows like ‘Hawaii Five-O’ and ‘Mannix.’

Now 71, Swit is divorced. She’s written a book on needlepoint and is an animal rights activist. Her credits since ‘M*A*S*H’ include ABC ‘Afterschool Specials’ and ‘Diagnosis Murder.’  (AP)

Farr broke out in Hollywood with a role in the film ‘Blackboard Jungle.’ TV work on ‘The Chicago Teddy Bears’ and ‘The Red Skelton Show’ led to his role as cross dressing Corporal Maxwell Q. Klinger. (AP)

Now 75, Farr has appeared in movies like ‘Cannonball Run,’ games shows, and TV movies like ‘Murder Can Hurt You.’ He’s hosted a radio show (‘Travelin’ Farr), appeared on Broadway in ‘Guys and Dolls,’ endorsed the Mars bar and started a golf tournament, the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic. Farr has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is married and has two children.  (REUTERS)  

Before being cast as self-important surgeon Major Franklin Delano Marion "Frank" Burns, Linville had many TV roles, such as ‘Mannix’ and ‘Mission: Impossible.’  (AP)

Linville appeared on series like ‘Murder, She Wrote’ and ‘Fantasy Island’ after he left ‘M*A*S*H.’ He also appeared in movies like ‘Earth Girls are Easy.’ Linville died at age 60. He was married five times and had one daughter.  (REUTERS)

Before he played Colonel Sherman T. Potter, Morgan was known for series like ‘December Bride,’ ‘Dragnet,’ ‘Pete and Gladys,’ and ‘Hec Ramsay.’  (AP)

Now 94, Morgan has appeared in many films, including the 1987 film version of ‘Dragnet’ as well as TV projects, like ‘3rd Rock from the Sun’ and ‘Grace Under Fire.’ He had four sons with his first wife, who passed away in 1985. He’s been married to his second wife since 1986.  (REUTERS)<br><br>

Burghoff is best known for playing Corporal Walter Eugene “Radar” O'Reilly. He’s the only TV show cast member who also appeared in the film. The actor frequently appeared on the game show ‘Match Game’ in the 1970s.

After ‘M*A*S*H’ Burghoff appeared regularly on TV. ‘Tattletales’ and ‘The Love Boat’ are among his credits. He was known as the “Gulf Guy” due to his commercials for the Gulf Petroleum Company. The actor is also a jazz drummer and a stamp collector. He invented “Chum Magic,” a fishing device. Now 66, Burghoff has been married twice and has three children. He’s recently appeared in local TV ads as a “doctor” for a California construction company.

Theater roles led to ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ and ‘Hogan’s Heroes,’ and eventually led to Christopher’s ‘M*A*S*H’ character: Father Francis Mulcahy.

After the show, Christopher remained active in theater, doing shows like ‘The Odd Couple.’ The actor also appeared on TV series like ‘Mad About You.’ Now 77, he is married with two sons.
