Viewers love watching the Miss America pageant in the same way they love watching Olympic figure skating: We enjoy the spectacle and aesthetics, but some of us are secretly hoping to watch somebody fall flat on their face. From the introductions through the aftermath, there were plenty of odd and unfortunate happenings to discuss. Take a look at the top five below.
- It's become customary for each Miss America contestant to introduce herself with a quick tidbit of trivia in her pre-recorded introduction, but some were more puzzling than informative. Miss North Dakota said, "From the state with the lowest unemployment, I'm looking for a job tonight." Miss Vermont stated, "Even though I'm lactose intolerant, Ben and Jerry are still my two favorite guys." - The fact that Myrrhanda Jones from Florida competed in a bedazzled knee brace isn't terribly awkward in and of itself, but we're pretty sure she felt plenty embarrassed after becoming injured during her talent rehearsal just a few days prior to the pageant. - Miss Florida continued to have a tough time last night. During the interview portion, host Chris Harrison (of ABC's "The Bachelor") cut her off in the middle of the interview portion and got booed. "It's a timed answer!" Harrison told the crowd, adding, "Don't make me the bad guy!" Apparently, his pleas didn't help, because the booing only got louder after that.read moreReutersShare
- New York's Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America at the end of the pageant, becoming the first woman of Indian heritage to ever take the title. But that didn't sit well with certain Twitter users, who used the social media site to share their racist comments.
