Stars Who Went Ugly
Most stars get glammed up for their movie roles and look great in the process. But as these actors know, sometimes going ugly for the craft is the best thing you can do!
- Mariah Carey recently got a serious make-under for her role in the new film “Precious,” where she plays a frumpy social worker. The star shed her diva clothing, jewels and perfectly styled hair for rayon threads and an unflattering dark wig. But if critical acclaim is any judge, the make-under seems like it was worth it. Carey has already earned rave reviews and is even generating Oscar buzz for her performance. - Gorgeous Nicole Kidman became a lot more homely, due in large part to a prosthetic nose, for her Oscar-winning role as Virginia Wolf in the 2003 film “The Hours.” The usually glam Kidman also donned a darker wig and got in touch with her inner ugly. - Halle Berry’s beauty was also radically downplayed for her Oscar-winning role as struggling mom Leticia Musgrove in the 2001 film “Monster’s Ball.” It wasn’t the first time the stunner had gone ugly for her craft – she played a crack head in the 1991 film “Jungle Fever.” (Photo: Lionsgate)read more
- Charlize Theron underwent a dramatic transformation to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the 2003 film “Monster.” The actress packed on 30 pounds, shaved her eyebrows, wore colored contacts, fake teeth, and was uglified with makeup used to make her skin appear freckled and splotchy. Maybe that’s where Mariah drew her inspiration from -- Theron took home the top honor of Best Actress at the Oscars that year. (Photo: Newmarket Films)read more
- Christian Bale whittled his hot body down to a skeletal-shape to play insomniac Trevor Reznik in the 2004 film “The Machinist.” But unlike his ugly-counterparts, Bale’s choice was quite a dangerous – just six weeks later, he began screen tests for “Batman Begins” and gained a whopping sixty plus pounds! - Matt Damon whittled himself down to nothing more than skin and bones to play Specialist Ilario in the 1996 film “Courage Under Fire.” Like Bale, Damon has also gained and lost significant amounts of weight for multiple roles, including “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (lost) and “The Bourne Identity” (gained). - Like Bale, Jared Leto packed on the pounds for a turn as an ugly star. But instead of chiseling his physique, he became virtually unrecognizable after gaining those 60 pounds of fat to play the part of Mark Chapman in “Chapter 27.” We bet it was no picnic taking it off either.
