"Modern Family" is adding a former NFL star for season eight.

Peyton Manning, the two-time Super Bowl champion, is heading to the hit ABC comedy -- and he won't be playing himself when he appears in the 12th episode of the season, ET confirms.

The 40-year-old retired quarterback will guest star as Coach Gary, baby Joe's sports tutor, who is brought in by Gloria (Sofia Vergara) to help teach him how to throw and catch.

This will mark Manning's first official acting role, though he previously hosted "Saturday Night Live" in 2007 and appeared as himself on "The Simpsons," "The Girls Next Door," "American Idol" and Neil Patrick Harris' variety show, "Best Time Ever."

Since retiring from the NFL after winning Super Bowl 50 in February, the former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos player has become more active on the Hollywood circuit. In September, he served as the roast master for Rob Lowe's Comedy Central roast.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the "Modern Family" news.

In March, Manning made the emotional announcement that he was saying goodbye to football after 18 successful seasons with the NFL. "Grateful is the word that comes to mind," a tearful Manning said.

"Modern Family" airs Wednesdays on ABC.
