McDonald’s Trademarked a Simple New Slogan, So Let's Hope It Has a Nice Jingle

(Reuters)

If you follow BurgerBusiness.com — and let's be honest, who doesn't? — you're already aware that McDonald's is trademarking a new slogan: "The Simpler the Better."

The company hasn't revealed when (or even if) they'll debut the phrase in their ads, but they'll need to pair it with a really catchy jingle when they do. For more than half a century, Mickey D's has relied on memorable melodies to remind customers of its newest offerings and latest promotions. The best are short, snappy, and send you speeding to the drive-thru; the worst are relegated to YouTube, where they're mocked for the rest of eternity.

For proof, look no further than the following McDonald's jingles from TV history:

"Ronald McDonald, The Hamburger Happy Clown"

You might remember that Willard Scott portrayed Ronald McDonald in his earliest TV appearances, but we're betting you don't remember his theme song.

"You Deserve a Break Today"

Corny but catchy, "You Deserve a Break Today" popped up in some form or another for decades after its 1971 debut. (Keep an eye out for John Amos of "Good Times" as a singing, dancing McD's employee.)

"Two All-Beef Patties, Special Sauce, Lettuce, Cheese, Pickles, Onions — on a Sesame Seed Bun"

Thanks to this one, we never have — and we never will — forget what comes with a Big Mac.

"There's More in the Middle of an Egg McMuffin"

The guys in this commercial can't even remember the words to the jingle. How were we supposed to stand a chance?

"Nothin' Nothin' Like an Egg McMuffin"

Wait, the Egg McMuffin has a second jingle? And a commercial starring John Goodman and Megan Mullally? Where has this been hiding?!

"McDLT"

Jason Alexander touts the novelty of a "lettuce and tomato hamburger" like it was a new concept in 1980s America.

"Good Times, Great Taste"

We're picking up a very distinct "Barney & Friends" vibe from this 1988 tune.

"What You Want Is What You Get"

There sure were a lot of bodybuilders eating at McDonald's in the early '90s, huh? Funny, we don't seem to remember that. Nor do we remember this jingle.

"Have You Had Your Break Today?"

This song feels slightly more memorable, but we can't say we remember singing it in the shower.

"I'm Lovin' It."

OK, we definitely remember the "I'm Lovin' It" jingle. But the Justin Timberlake song that spawned it? Not so much.
