No surprise. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s mega Broadway hit “Hamilton” continued to make history Tuesday when it took over the Tony Award nominations with a record of 16 nods.

The revolutionary hip-hop musical about the first U.S. Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton led the nominations including best musical — effectively shattering the 15-nomination record held by “The Producers” and “Billy Elliot.”

"I feel really grateful that they kind of spread the wealth. It's hard to ask for more," Miranda said. "This isn't a book award. This isn't like I wrote some novel by myself with an editor. Theater requires collaboration and I'm lucky to be working with some of the best people in their respective fields alive right now."

"Hamilton" was nominated in virtually every category it could compete in, from acting to scenic design.

The other shows with top nominations were the new musical "Shuffle Along," a show that explores a groundbreaking 95-year-old musical starring, written and directed by African-Americans, which got 10 nods, and the revival of "She Loves Me," which earned eight.

"Hamilton" earned seven acting nominations — Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson and Renee Elise Goldsberry. It also earned nominations for scenic design, costumes, lighting design, direction, choreography, orchestrations, best book and best original score.

"Hamilton" has burst through the Broadway bubble like few shows have. U.S. presidential candidates have tweeted about it, it has influenced the debate over the nation's currency and the show has been referenced on "Saturday Night Live" and "Inside Amy Schumer."

In the best musical category, it will complete alongside "Bright Star," ''School of Rock," ''Shuffle Along" and "Waitress."

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o received her first ever Tony nomination for her outstanding work on the play “Eclipsed.” The Mexican-Kenyan actress won the Academy Award for her role in “12 Years a Slave.”

"I am deeply proud to be nominated for my work in the Danai Gurira's Tony-nominated 'Eclipsed.' My performance could not exist without the brilliance of my iron clad co-stars Pascale Armand, Akosua Busia, Zainab Jah, and Saycon Sengbloh, with the direction of Liesl Tommy," she said. "Our hope is to awaken something in the consciousness of our audience to effect change around the world. The six Tony nominations Eclipsed has received today gives me hope that we are succeeding."

“Eclipsed” is also nominated for best play alongside ''The Father," ''The Humans" and "King Charles III."

The new jukebox musical “On Your Feet!”, showcasing the story of Gloria and Emilio Estefan, received a lone nomination for its choreographer Sergio Trujillo.

Hollywood stars didn't do so well on Tuesday, with Clive Owen, Al Pacino, Bruce Willis, Keira Knightley, Saoirse Ronan and George Takei all missing out on nods. Ana Villafañe, who plays Gloria Estefan, also missed out on a nomination.

The awards will be handed out June 12, with James Corden playing host from the Beacon Theatre in New York.
