Following in the footsteps on NBC with its live musical events, Fox announced on Saturday it had cast Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens to star in a “Grease” primetime musical.

The musical, which was announced in April, will follow similar attempts by NBC to take classic musical hits and air them live on TV with an updated cast.

NBC saw success with its Dec. 2013 “Sound of Music” remake that starred Carrie Underwood, but its Dec. 2014 “Peter Pan Live!” musical featuring Allison Williams flopped.

In the Fox “Grease” reboot, Hough will play Sandy and Hudgens will play Rizzo.

Sandy was memorably played by Olivia Newton John in the 1978 flick and Stockard Channing was played Rizzo.

“’Grease’ is one of the movies that made me want to be an entertainer, and I have literally been waiting my whole life to play Sandy,” Hough said in a statement after the casting was announced.

On the flip side, Hudgens said she never pictured herself as Rizzo.

“Playing Rizzo is something I’ve never imagined, and I love that because it will be a new challenge,” the former Disney star said. “I cannot wait to bring her to life in live television. I am going to be a pink lady!”
