After announcing his engagement on David Letterman Monday, eccentric actor Joaquin Phoenix said he made it all up.

"I think my life's so boring, and it seemed like something exciting to talk about, and I wanted the audience to like me," he told Good Morning America Tuesday. "They really like people getting married. I can get engaged again, if you like."

Phoenix initially told David Letterman that he had found "the one."

"I think she's the one," he told Letterman of a fictional yoga instructor. "I proposed to her and she said yes. If everything works out...so far, so good."

    The 40-year-old was just trying to "spice up his 'story' a little bit." His rep told the U.K.'s Independent that the story was a "joke."
