Jenni Rivera’s Film 'Filly Brown' Hitting Big Screen in April

Jenni Rivera’s film “Filly Brown,” her debut in the big screen, will be hitting theaters in April of next year, entertainment site Enelbrasero.com is reporting.

The movie, which was a hit during last year’s Sundance and HBO Latino International Film Festivals, also stars Hollywood veteran actor Edward James Olmos.

“Her acting is incredible,” Olmos told Mexican entertainment magazine TV Notas about Rivera’s breakthrough role. “She can win the Oscar,” he added.

“She impressed my son and I with how much she did for the film even though she was only present for a short period of time,” Olmos said, adding that his son was one of the main producers of the flick.

“She ended up being great for the drama,” she continued. “I saw her cry with such emotion… very passionately. A great actress ready to debut in film,” he said.

Rivera plays a jailed mother who abandoned her child and, while in prison, is working toward helping her daughter achieve her dreams of becoming a rap star.

According to Enelbrasero.com, “La Diva de la Banda” never got to see the film once it was completed and showing at Sundance and other festivals, due to the marital problems she was facing with her third husband, former Chicago White Sox player Esteban Loaiza.

Rivera, killed Dec. 9 in a plane crash in northern México, was at the peak of her career as perhaps the most successful female singer in grupero, a male-dominated regional style influenced by the norteño, cumbia and ranchero styles.

The small aircraft was en route from Monterrey to Toluco, just outside Mexico City, when it was reported missing about 10 minutes after takeoff.

She was 43 and leaves behind five children.
